Privacy Policy
LexLevel is designed to work primarily offline. This policy explains what stays on your device, how optional community pronunciation recordings use iCloud, when a searched word is sent to an online dictionary, and how Google advertising services may process data.
Effective July 23, 2026
1. Information stored on your device
LexLevel stores the following information locally so its features can work:
- Saved words and folders you create
- Your recent lookup history, limited to the 200 most recent words
- Flashcard study progress and review scheduling
- Your selected visual theme and app preferences
This information is not uploaded to a server operated by LexLevel. It remains until you remove individual saved words or delete the app.
2. Online dictionary fallback
LexLevel searches its bundled offline dictionary first. If the requested word is not available offline, the app sends that word to the Free Dictionary API to request a definition. LexLevel does not intentionally add your name, email address, saved vocabulary, or lookup history to that request. The API provider and network infrastructure may process technical network information, such as an IP address, under their own practices.
3. Google advertising and consent
LexLevel uses the Google Mobile Ads SDK to display a banner ad on the Search screen and Google's User Messaging Platform SDK to collect privacy choices where required. Depending on your region, consent, device settings, and the ad served, Google may process:
- IP address and approximate location derived from it
- Device or advertising identifiers
- Ad impressions, taps, and other product interactions
- Diagnostic, crash, and performance information
Google may use this information to provide and measure ads, limit repeated ads, prevent fraud, and comply with legal requirements. Learn more in Google's Privacy Policy and Google's advertising data information.
On supported iOS versions, LexLevel asks for App Tracking Transparency permission before Google may access the device's advertising identifier for tracking across apps and websites. If you decline, the app can still request ads, but the advertising identifier is not included. You can change this permission later in iOS Settings.
Where Google requires a privacy-options entry point, you can review or change your choice inside LexLevel by opening My Words, tapping the information button, and selecting Privacy choices.
4. Pronunciation and microphone access
The standard speaker button uses Apple's system speech synthesizer and does not record you. If you choose to contribute a community pronunciation, LexLevel requests microphone access so you can record and preview a clip of up to eight seconds. The app does not record in the background. A recording is uploaded only after you review it, accept the community terms, and tap Submit.
5. Community pronunciation data and iCloud
Community pronunciation features use Apple CloudKit. Reading approved public recordings does not require an iCloud account. Submitting a recording, rating, reporting content, or blocking a contributor requires an active iCloud account so CloudKit can associate the action with a stable, app-specific user record.
Depending on the action you choose, CloudKit may store:
- Your voice recording, selected accent, target word, clip duration, submission time, and the version of the contributor consent you accepted
- Your rating for a recording
- A content report, report reason, and optional details you provide
- App-specific identifiers used to prevent duplicate ratings, hide contributors, process deletion requests, and enforce moderation
LexLevel does not ask contributors to publish a name, email address, profile photo, or biography. Approved recordings are public to LexLevel users. Pending recordings are available only to their contributor and authorized moderators.
6. Moderation, reports, and blocking
Every recording is reviewed before it becomes public. Users can report a public recording and hide future recordings from the same contributor. Reports are reviewed and may result in removal of content or restriction of a contributor. A recording may be removed for policy violations, rights requests, accuracy, quality, security, or legal reasons.
7. Retention, access, export, and deletion
Pending and approved recordings do not have a fixed expiry date. Featured recordings may remain available indefinitely while they continue to meet the community rules. In the app, open About & privacy, then My pronunciation data to view submission metadata, export it as JSON, or delete a submission. Deleting the source submission also removes the associated public recording. You may also contact us for assistance with access or deletion.
Locally stored dictionary data remains on your device until you remove it or delete the app. Deleting the app does not itself delete a community recording already submitted to CloudKit; use My pronunciation data first or contact us.
8. Information we do not request
LexLevel does not request your contacts, photos, camera, or precise location. It does not create a separate LexLevel password. Microphone access is optional and used only when you start a community recording. The current version does not offer purchases or subscriptions.
9. Data sharing and sale
LexLevel does not sell your saved words, lookup history, study progress, voice recordings, ratings, or reports. Data may be processed by Apple, Google, the online dictionary provider, and network infrastructure only for the services described above, including iCloud hosting, online definitions, consent management, advertising, measurement, security, and moderation.
10. Children
LexLevel is a general-audience vocabulary tool and is not directed to children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children through an account or developer-operated server.
11. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy when the app's features, service providers, or legal obligations change. The effective date above will identify the latest version.
